She Said No

by joetwo

Sitting and waiting

Head held low

Trying to ignore the looks

All the hatred of those behind me

My once friends, closest family

Strangers in the room

Boring into the back of my neck

Shame almost made physical in its intensity

All hands and comfort have abandoned me

Even my lawyer, my appointed guardian, has gone cold

The judge shifts, ready to speak

To pass sentence

I ponder what had happened

How I thought she had meant Yes

When all the time she had said No
