By the canal
Two young lovers walk
Arms entwined
Sharing a moment together
Amongst the bustle of the city

By the canal
Two men sit
Surrounded by filth and old cans
They hold an old fishing rod
A last-ditch attempt at a decent meal

By the canal
A mother watches her child
Feeding the ducks
Revelling in his power
The command over the birds

By the canal
An old man sits
Watching everything
Seeing with the wisdoms of more years gone than ahead
Smiling contentedly at all that has happened before
