Poetry from a Dublin Scientist

Month: October, 2014

Haikus 30/10/14

Patter of rain drops
Very little come at first
Start of a deluge

Rathmines’ new Blackbird
Toy spaceships hang from ceiling
What more do you need

I love halloween
Women can slut themselves up
Eye candy for all

Old Dublin city
So that everyone’s equal
Celebs are ignored

Limericks 29/10/14

Last night I spotted a mouse
On the bottom floor of my house
It showed no fear
And came quite near
As I nervously listened to Strauss

A old lady once made a fuss
While queuing to wait for the bus
Said she “I’ve no money to pay
But it’s raining all day
And my hair is a terrible muss!”

Muerte

Dead, gone, passed on
Such simple words
Yet words that hold so much import
Words of ended families
Lives stopped in their prime
Hearts left void
Hurt beyond measure

We fear it, like we fear all unknowns
We fear the pain
We fear the loss to those we leave behind
We fear what will never be
We fear what may come after
We fear nothing
Because everything is gone
Melted away to oblivion

How we long sometimes
To reach beyond those simple words
To find again those we have lost
But such a power is beyond us
Death in its verbal simplicity
Shows absolute dominion
An impenetrable barrier
One way only

Down the road

I look down the road
Past the fields of my youth
The factories where I toil through my days
Past hills and forests, seas and cities
Past all I ever knew
And I think of the wonders that might live there
How great the adventure
How much fun their lives might be
I feel jealously for them, mild contempt for the life I am living
And it sucks, each and every day, a little bit of flavour from my world
Oblivious all the while
To those poor souls
Past the fields, factories, hills, forests, seas, and cities
Staring back in my direction
In their own piteous drudgery
Thinking the exact same thing about me

Winter Sun

It feels like a lie

A horrific deceit

Warming yellow light in the window

But when one leaves

Goes out into that same sun

One finds only cold

A chill, brought on the wind

Jacket, coat, scarf

All required, no exceptions

But still one see the brightness of the sun

Feels its warmth on skin

Warmth quickly lost to the wind

Stolen in its ephemeral clutches

Leaving no choice

No matter who gloriously bright it is

To wrap up warm

And return to the warmth of hearth and home

Cast Off

Cast off with me my love

Leave your life behind

Let us sail the oceans of possibility

Where anything can happen

And only our imaginations can constrain us

Cast away your preconceptions

Your doubts

And your heavy heart

Think only of the future

Think of what we can be

The wondrous things we can do

If we cast off

And start a new life

Together

Try novel technique

Last stab at an old problem

Maybe it will work

Absolutely rank

What a horrible odour

Ammonia gas

#

Puppies climbing stairs

It’s so maddeningly cute

I just have to share

Beat Poet

The beat poet rises

To the front of the crowd

Rhyme bubbling in his belly

Verse crying to get out

He opens his mouth

Words comes in rhythmic pulses

Linked in perfect synchrony

A beat of verse

So catchy his whole body moves to each word

Moving with each beat in the verse

Across the audience

Others join him

Moving heads, tapping feet

As one, in time with the words

Dancing to the music of the beat poet

Serpent: A Pleiades

Snake hunting in the grass
Slivery glint in its eye
Scales of metallic black
Slipping past jagged blades
Sticking out its forked tongue
Sensing when it is close
Set to strike at its prey

Budget tomorrow
Let us see if things will change
Or just stay the same

Story telling man
Cloaked in warm dark-green cotton
Really looks the part

Elephant babies
Two little boys and a girl
Tiny trunks entwined

On the Liffey’s banks
Underneath a bright blue sky
Watching boats go by
