Cape in the Wind

Walking home
Halloween party reluctantly over
Costume half-off, half-on
Gone is the mask
But remaining, defiant
A cape, blood scarlet
Home, past merry revelers
Public urination
Brief moments of passion
I ignore them all
Only my homeward goal
Perhaps a quick stop for a bite
But nothing else
Only the rhythmic march of steps
The stars overhead
The cold night air
And my cape rustling in the wind
As I ponder a night to savour

Moonrise

image

Moonrise over a tired city
The day of work is done
The denizens of the night emerge
Free to spread their havoc
Unleash their foul mischief
While we all sleep
After moonrise over the city
If is no longer ours anymore

The Yummy Mummy

Early morning
Parked in front of school gates
Dressed to impress
In figure-hugging dressing
Undoing seatbelts is complicated
She takes her time
All the better to see her
To catch the eye of passersby
And with it the faintest of smiles
As the Yummy Mummy knows
She’s still got it.

Introductions

I’d like to make my introductions
Let you get to know me
Who I am
What I have done
There is a lot of story you know
More than meets the eye
It may be surprising
Might come as a shock
But it is me
All of it
Every piece playing it’s part
All important, all integral
If I am to make my introductions
In the interest of fairness
I can’t not introduce that

Magic

In front I stand
Weaving my words
Casting my spell of fiction
Of rhyme and verse
Tall tales of daring do
Sweet moments of romance
All wrapped in the gift of language
The wonderous spoken word
I see it weave its exquisite trap
Grabbing hold of imagination
Keeping the soul in thrall
A hundered faces watch in awe
Hanging on every word
As the storyteller casts his spell

Forgive Me

Forgive me
Excuse my absence
The lack of verse and rhyme
Which once graced these pages
With clockwork regularity
I have been remiss
Lacking in will
The dedication
Which may be expected
And even deserved
Forgive me
Accept my apologies
And fear not
For the pen will not be silent forever

Not Done

The battle is over
We have lost
Ungraciously at first
But the war is not over
There is much to fight over
More ground to defend
And defend it we shall
To the last man
With our last breath
Through fair means
And foul
We still have fight in us
While we stand we shall resist
Remember that always
You may have won the battle
But we are not done yet

Into the Depths

The hole waits before me
It gobbles light like a collapsed star
None of it can escape
It’s mysterious, creepy
Yet irresistibly inviting
In I go
Past cold stone
Clawing at wet rock
Until I reach a chamber
Filled with the silence of old magic
And behind I see
The whole light of the world shining through

Do I need a reason

So I need a reason
To capture such beauty?
To record it beyond the confines of memory
As a treasured reminder
For when times are grim and dull
That there is beauty in the world
If you only know where to look
