Poetry from a Dublin Scientist

I once had a friend who pray tell
Had a very fine suit left to sell
Said he “it’s fitted for smalls
Though was stored in mothballs
And we can’t do a thing ’bout the smell!”

I understand scientists need
All research papers to read
But you buy all those books
Give them a few looks
And you’re left with barely a screed

Your attention

Let me have your attention

Undivided and unrequited

As I lay it down for you

Tell you how it is

How it’s going to be

A place for you and a place for me

A place for everyone

No outsiders

No deviations from the norm

A great experiment in mediocrity

No conflict, no problem

Only uniformity

A safe secure existence

Happily plodding along

My vision to you

And you will listen

Because I bring safety out of danger

Order from Chaos

And that is what you really want

Not freedom

Not ever

Powdered happiness

It started slow

Dose by dose, spoonful by spoonful

Little aliquots of powdered happiness

Available to all, for a price

#

Reaching nirvana is simplicity itself

No meditation or soul mate required

A jab to the vein, breath in through the nose

Will bring you straight, no go back, no detours

#

Dangerous are the economics of the game

Inflationary pressures on the powder means more over time

Prices getting higher, on the body, on the pocket, on the soul

A price that eventually gets too high

#

It always starts slow

Those little doses of happiness

But evermore does it grow

The eternal cost of a quick-fit route to oblivion.
